Fanatics who abuse religious ideals for corrupt power

by Harrold "Haole" A`hole

I started writing my first book, Fun with Fundamentalists, and then decided there might not be any fun-loving fundamentalists. Poking fun at them, be they Christian, Jewish, Islamic or Atheist, is something you have to do at your own peril. A lot of people have died disagreeing with these folks. Jesus would have been a stand-up comedian next to these inspired souls who are wound up to so tight that God apparently uses them as his bow, along with a few pointy headed folks for his arrows.

After I wrote a simple letter to the editor of our local newspaper suggesting that self-proclaimed Christians in government might want to consider treating people nicer instead of executing them, invading their countries and lying to them. Instead, these otherwise good people might want to think about how Jesus might have handled any given situation. In response, I received a phone call from one who thought I was about as stupid as they come. I thought he might be on to something -- my wife and kid have suggested something similar -- until he opened his mouth and proved there's at least one less mentally gifted than I, so at worst, I must have been the penultimate when standing in line for brains.

He kept telling me I was all wrong about Jesus. My "feel good" Jesus of love, peace charity and acceptance in order to please God was full of it. He pointed out passages in the Old Testament. So I asked him if he was a Jew or a Christian. He confirmed he was a Christian. Then I asked him why he keeps quoting everybody but Jesus, so he gave me a quote from John the Baptist! He then returned to Adam and Eve's children, Cain and Abel (though he couldn't remember their names which tells you a lot), and how one was evil, inspired by the devil to kill his brother. So evil is real and God needs our help to weed it out. When I mentioned that I didn't happen to believe in a literal reading of those ancient stories, he asked if I believed in Adam and Steve instead. I could see where this was going: nowhere.

Fundamentalists aren't fun. But they sound quite mental.
