Smoking out more criminals

by Harrold "Haole" A`hole

In Seattle, smoking bans continue to widen. You already can't smoke on the job, near schools or in government buildings. Some want to ban smoking in parks or at the beach. The marketplace here has already created a majority of restaurants that are smoke-free because its patrons don't want to be bothered by second-hand smoke.

But that's not good enough Enjoying a good cigar for the self-proclaimed do-gooders who often are the same people who approve of our invading countries that don't attack us and then kill, maim and torture their residents for years.

So, we now have a tavern owner who is a smoker and would like to smoke in his own business.

The owner then hires hard-working Americans who are also smokers and want to be able to smoke on the job.

This owner then advertises and creates customer demand for his tavern and finds adults who would like to smoke when they go to the tavern.

This owner pays a lot of money to install a ventilation system that silently whisks the smoke away, even if everyone inside will pay to inhale smoke voluntarily.

The owner pays substantial taxes to license his business. He pays taxes on the real property his business occupies and equipment he owns. He pays a percentage of every dollar generated, regardless of his profits, in business and occupations taxes. He pays employment, unemployment, Medicare and social security taxes. He pays sales taxes on all of his products, tools and furnishings. He pays specialty taxes for energy, phones, liquor, beer, wine and tobacco products. He offers state-sponsored gambling to drive revenue for the state.

But soon he may be a criminal if he continues to allow these good Americans to enjoy themselves and earn a living.

Do we really need to convert more hard-working, tax-paying, economy-driving, family-loving people into criminals?

Clearly this is the well-known oppression of the majority through democracy. Democracy is extremely dangerous and susceptible to mob rule unless it's tempered by respect and rights for individuals. With voting at record lows, it doesn't even take a majority to pass such un-American laws dictating the choices and tastes of other adults.

Why do Americans like to create "criminals" out of adults who want to engage in an activity just because some activist group's moral judgment precludes allowing sensible adults to engage in activities they desire but the activist blowhards hate?

Maybe we should Tally the Bans being imposed on good Americans by our growing American Taliban.
